Upcoming: Writing & Community Programmes in 2016!

As we look back at 2015, TheatreWorks would like to thank everyone for your support over the past year. Through TheatreWorks Writers’ Laboratory Writing & Community Programme organized in partnership with our dedicated community partner South East Community Development Council, we presented range of programmes which serves the community and harness the talents in community. Some programmes presented in 2015 include: Performance Tour of Three Inches of Alive, 24-Hour Playwriting Competition 2015 and our latest series workshops and dramatised readings of new plays developed at Writing From The Heart.

Here’s to recap our moments in 2015,

Upcoming in 2016, we have an exciting programme line-up for Writing & Community Programme! First up, we have the Performance Tour of Between Consciousness, which is the winning play in 24-Hour Playwriting Competition 2015, Open Category. Written by Isaac Lim, this a two-performer playful piece which deals with struggles and how one overcomes the stigma of mental illness. Between Consciousness will tour to Mountbatten CC, Siglap South CC and Marine Parade CC in South East District  from February to March 2016.

Back by popular demand, Writing From The Heart, a series of playwriting workshops conducted by Tony Perez returns to 72-13 in April 2016. In addition, Tony Perez will be working with a handful of writers from the previous workshops to develop a new play which will in turn be further devised and developed into public dramatised readings.

Last but not least, we will be having our 19th edition of 24-Hour Playwriting Competition in July 2016.

Curious about the site of inspiration for the next competition? Follow our new blog at Writing and Community 2016 blog for more information and the latest updates on the programmes.

Here’s wishing everyone a wonderful 2016!

Review on Serunding at Titian Budaya

Last weekend, Serunding written by Ahmad Musta’ain Bin Khamis, prize winning play of the TheatreWorks’ 24-Hour Playwriting Competition 2010 (Open Category) was performed in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) as part of Titian Budaya.

“Thanks to its striking honesty, amusing anecdotes, and a stellar turn from Alin, Serunding was a highly-rewarding staging on top of a great example of English-language Malay literature kept simple and effective.”

– Deric Ect, The Daily Seni, 14 Dec 2015

Serunding at Titian Budaya, KL

This Saturday, Serunding will be staged at Kuala Lumpur, as part of Titian Budaya. Serunding, written by Ahmad Musta’ain Bin Khamis, is the winning play of TheatreWorks’ 24-Hour Playwriting Competition 2010 (Open category), and has since been performed at numerous venues in Singapore. It was the first winning play to premiere in Performance Tours to the South East District in 2010 and 2011, and North East District in 2011. The play was also staged at Malay Heritage Centre last year, to inspire and encourage participants at 24-Hour Playwriting Competition 2014.

Starring the delightful and popular Aidli Mosbit once again, this one-woman play stirs to life the voice of Safiah like a perfect dish of serunding. Told through humour, food and many phone calls, Serunding draws us to the heart and pain of a mother’s love. A spicy sweet expression of the Singapore family caught at the centre of cultural values and modern living.

“…Serunding is a joy to watch—the personable Safiah talks animatedly to her audience throughout, interspersing her life story with equally-animated phone conversations with her fellow makcik friends.”

– Juliana June Rasul, The New Paper, 7 Dec 2010

“The script was artfully crafted, its warm tone sitting very well with the audience, who laughed and cried with the protagonist wholeheartedly.”

– Natalie Koh, The Business Times, 10 Dec 2010

We Discuss Writings from The Heart

The post show discussion of Writings from The Heart shed light on the playwrights experience and the content of their plays which highlighted existing social issues through the characters. For them, the post show discussion was vital in aiding the development of their scripts as the comments and thoughts from the audience allowed them to reflect, edit and question sections of their work and the portrayal of their characters.

It’s A Wrap! Writings from The Heart

On 10- 11 July, I had the opportunity to film Writings from The Heart. Writings from The Heart  first began as a workshop by Tony Perez, an internationally renowned Filipino playwright and artist. Following the workshop, between June 2014 to March 2015, he then provided dramaturgical mentorship to the eight playwrights where these scripts were developed. Prior the the public readings of these plays, there was a closed door reading in May that gave the opportunity for the playwrights to hear their works and subsequently edit them. It was undoubtedly an enjoyable experience attending the premiere of these new plays. After sitting in the rehearsal for My Mother Buys Condoms earlier that week, I was curious to see the rest.
